About FSS

Foundation for Sight and Sound

The Foundation For Sight and Sound's mission is to enhance the quality of life for men, women and children with vision and/or hearing impairments.”

Foundation For Sight & Sound is a registered 501c3 not for Profit Corporation started March 2004.
Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for men, women and children with vision and/or hearing challenges.

Funds are raised through a variety of special events, general donations from the private and corporate sector, grants, bequests and the generosity of many volunteers who give their valuable time. Monies are channeled to our two signature programs Help America Hear and our three Scholarships.

We are dedicated to creating a world where people with vision and/or hearing challenges can realize their full potential, allowing them to lead lives of inclusion and not isolation. The Foundation feels we can provide opportunities for our constituents to be active participants in society through innovative programs.

It’s all about possibilities and potential!

It’s hard to imagine a world without vision and/or hearing yet it can happen to anyone at any time due to traumatic or genetic circumstances. It is life altering and does not discriminate.

I know firsthand as I live life with Usher Syndrome, the leading cause of deaf-blindness.  I have worn hearing aids for 50 years and now have two cochlear implants, my vision loss is at a point where I do not see objects, colors and cannot read.  From conversations with many individuals across the country, many people simply give up on living life to the best of their abilities.  I could not have imagined the impact of their absence…the countless ways in which the loss of sight and sound would steal my independence and enjoyment of life.

Being blind and deaf is not life threatening – it certainly is, however, life altering. As the population ages, more and more people may soon be forced to live without one or more senses.

One of the most important things I have learned through my personal experience is that there is only one way to move – forward…..  “One step at a time.”

This is the approach we follow at The Foundation For Sight & Sound. We know we cannot cure the many causes of blindness and deafness, nor are we capable of removing all obstacles. What we CAN DO is create innovative programs, like our signature program Help America Hear,   which provide the tools necessary   for inclusion not isolation in society, opening the doors to those who have been shut-out for far too long.

In many ways, I have been incredibly fortunate.  Through my work with Foundation For Sight & Sound, I have been given the opportunity to work with some incredibly dedicated & beautiful people. We have formed an organization that envisions a world without limitations and, I am immensely proud of what the Foundation has accomplished so far – but our journey has just begun.

Please join us in our mission. Let’s take the next step forward, together.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus once said, “If you feel rooted in your home and family, if you’re active in your community, there’s nothing more empowering. The best way to make a difference in the world is to start by making a difference in your own life.”

Sight and Sound: Our two most precious senses.

They color our world with majestic landscapes and children’s laughter, along with connecting us to the world and the people around us.

Millions of Americans are legally blind and/or profoundly deaf and live in a world devoid of these pleasures. This is just part of the story, for visual and hearing loss are often partial, degenerative or intermittent, leaving millions with a diminishment of senses that impair their everyday functioning.

These conditions touch the lives of nearly all of us by association with a parent, a child, a loved one, a friend…

While the FSS stands for enhancing the quality of life for people facing vision and hearing impairments- regardless of their origin, it is important to note some of the main diseases and conditions that cause the loss of SIGHT & SOUND.

The Foundation for Sight & Sound is committed to helping the millions of Americans facing these, and many other conditions, such as:

Leading Causes of Hearing Loss:
Work-related accidents
Auto Immune Disorder
Otosclerosis
Auditory Neuropathy
Hereditary Genetic Disorders

Leading Visual Conditions:
Macular Degeneration
Glaucoma
Retinitis Pigmentosa
Diabetic Retinopathy

Leading Causes of Deaf/Blindness:
Usher Syndrome
Rubella
