Grateful Letter to Mitch from College Student

Hello Mitch;

I am pleased to have found out my mother has contacted you, she is always
looking to help me any way she can. This all begin from me asking her the
other day if she could clip some coupons for me (because she is the coupon
queen) for hearing aid batteries so I can try and save some money when it
comes to buying new ones. I currently am a student at SUNY Cortland
attending my last semester on campus doing a full time unpaid internship. My
internship runs Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30 pm along with after hour
campus activities that we have to attend. My job involves working in the
health promotion office for the university planning, organizing, attending,
and educating different health related functions for the students on campus. An
example of this would be our upcoming body application week. I am very
lucky to have landed this internship because I am doing what I love, helping
people and educating a healthy life style.
Along with working my internship I also work at the campus fitness center
usually 6am-8am then 5pm-7pm. I currently live on my own making my financial
situation tight so saving every penny helps.

Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have your help with donating
hearing aid batteries to me. I cannot thank you enough and your help well
never be forgotten.

I have been attending college for 6 years receiving my associate’s degree in
liberal arts, and I will be receiving my bachelor’s degree in community
health with a concentration in wellness and promotion this May. College has
been a struggle for me, having 14 surgeries for my ears in high school due
to cholesteatoma is a battle that I will never forget. My hearing
impairment kind of left me as an outcast, I never heard whispers, was not
allowed to play sports, and could barely hear teachers. I felt alone in my
own quite world. I always remember calling my mother in the high school
bathroom crying asking her to come pick me up because I could not hear.
After 14 surgeries I have found myself cholesteatoma free for about 5 years.
The battle I struggle with now is maintaining my hearing. Recently, over the
summer by hearing loss became pretty bad and the discussion of a hearing aid
was once in my life again. I remember the first time speaking to a hearing
aid specialist back in high school, she asked what ones I wanted to try on
and I said that I did not want to try any of them on. Nervous scared anxious
I made an appointment.

My main fear came from how I was going to look, like you said in your video
I will now be different on the outside but the same on the inside. This was
a hard reality for me because during that time I was preparing for my 2nd &
3rd body bodybuilding bikini competition. These competitions involve a
tremendous amount of self-discipline, dedication, and hard work. My biggest
fear then became my appearance on stage. I feared working my hardest and
loosing because I had an ugly device strapped to my ear.

With all my worries in mind I made an appointment and tried on a hearing aid
for the first time. Again, words can’t describe the feeling I had for the
first time I COULD HEAR. I heard the receptionist in the other room, my
little brother sliding his foot, my own voice, and my mother so clearly; I
had never felt so much joy in my life. So the decision was made and I was to
be receiving my very first hearing aid.

On a side note: I would just like to add that the fact that hearing aids are
not covered under insurance blows my mind. Working and learning the health
care field I know how many individuals need assistance that has very little
covered under insurance. Which makes me respect you and what you do so much
more knowing you are literally giving the people the ability to hear again.

Back to my story, at first I was shy with my hearing aid I did not want anyone to know but I slowly became more comfortable with it. When it came to my
competition time I was nervous as ever, afraid I was going to lose because
my hearing aid would make me less beautiful as everyone else. So I took a
risk and competed using my hearing aid, on stage in front of about one
hundred people I threw my fears out the window. That competition I placed
4th. Still motivated I competed the next weekend even informing some of the
staff that I was hearing impaired and to please assist me by making sure I
know when it is my turn to enter the stage. That competition I was more
confident and I feel the judges knew it. I finally placed 1st winning my
NABBA Pro Bikini Competitor Card. I also placed first in the couples
division with my boyfriend.

I feel like I faced my biggest fear and beat it. Now I am no longer ashamed
of my hearing aid because it has changed my life so much. My whole experience
with a hearing disability has made me who I am today. I am more
understanding of others with disabilities and I try to make everyone I meet
smile. Even though I no longer wish to compete as a bikini competitor I
still enjoy working out and lifting weights and will be competing in the
school weight lifting meet this semester.

Some days it’s a struggle and in the past I used to wonder “why me” but I
understand now I have been given this gift because I am strong enough to
handle it. I am given this gift to help others to help make the world a
better place one person at a time. I would not change the life that was
given to me for a million dollars because this struggle has shown me that
my disability does not own me I own my disability.

Thank you so much again for your help! Also, thank you for sharing your
struggles, videos and creating this foundation. This foundation that you
have created has now personally touched my life and the lives of many others
you are truly a great man. Thank you

2012 Day of Thanks Mission

Gift of Sound/Day of Thanks Hearing Aid Mission

November 17, 2012 was an exciting day for 8 East End Long Island residents who received the gift of hearing aids and phones designed for hearing impaired individuals.

The mission was led by Help America Hear co-founder Dave Carr and his staff at McGuires Hearing & Audiological Services. A pleasant surprise of the day was the founders of McGuire’s, Jim and Marge. There presence at the 2nd Day of Thanks Hearing Aid Mission was truly an inspiring moment to the day as they observed and spoke to all the recipients and staff.

Each recipient left with hearing aids from Resound and phones from Amplicom and were thrilled to hear sounds not heard for so many years. One person who stood out was Chris, who did not believe before coming in that he was actually getting the hearing aids donated to him. He exclaimed after going outside, I can’t believe how great I can hear now. I had other hearing aids but never wore them as they didn’t work right. He asked how he was able to get his hearing aids at no cost.

Board member Terry Üellendahl explained how the Foundation For Sight & Sound raises money to provide hearing aids to men, women & children who lack the financial resources to obtain them. Chris became a believer and has promised he will help the Foundation help others.
There are many people who receive hearing aids throughout the year from many professionals. I can personally advise anyone who goes for hearing aids to make sure they learn, listen and understand everything they can before making their choice on the device and the professional they deal with. There is a device for everyone based on their hearing loss and a person must choose a hearing aid best suited for their hearing loss.

Respectfully submitted

Hello Friends and Collegues!!

It is the time of the year we celebrate an American tradition; Thanksgiving. A time to share the abundance of the harvest from the months gone by. The people who lost their homes to natural disaster, the hard working person who lost their job to the volatile economic climate, the men & women in our armed forces who suffered bodily harm or are somewhere other than with family and most of all our family. We all tend to take our worldly possessions, health and life for granted.

Montefiore Mission 2012

The Foundation For Sight & Sound’s Help America Hear Program held its 4th Gift of Sound Hearing Aid Mission at Montefiore Hospital on September 15th, 2012.
For the first time an invocation was held by Father Peter through the Bronx Rotary Club. This was a special treat to start this way. Miquel Santiago, has been involved with the program for three years and has taken a keen interest in what Help America Hear does in the Bronx community. He is a member of the Bronx Rotary Foundation and makes it a point to support our efforts to provide hearing aids in his community. Also in attendance were four other Rotarians to witness the process of a mission.
The day started at 9:30 am with our first group of recipients who by the time they were finished had big smiles and happy tears on their faces. From the 14 year old teenager to the elderly senior, each person had only words of thanks and gratitude for the gift to hear again. Each person was amazed at how much better they were able to understand what was being said to them.
Recipients received two high quality ReSound hearing aids. This year our newest partner, Amplicom provided each recipient with a telephone designed specifically for people who are hard of hearing.
Working the mission this year were the staff from McGuire’s Hearing & Audiological services and a team lead by Laura Tocci, Au.D. Director of Audiology, Speech, and Voice at Montefiore Hospital. Joining us this year was intern Sara!
Representing Amplicom were Steve & Michael who personally handed each recipient their new phone to go with the ReSound hearing aids. Both Steve & Mike were in awe of what the Gift of Sound Hearing Aid Mission entails and expressed interest in a long term involvement.
We were also joined by a team of News 12 Westchester and two young college students, Sara & Courtney from New York University Journalism School. The two students stayed from beginning to end to record and interview both staff and recipients for their school project.
This being our 4th mission at Montefiore, I find each one different in its own way. The gratitude and appreciation shown by the recipients makes it well worth the time and energy to work harder to raise funds to provide the gift of hearing aids. When you see the smiles and happy tears of joy on the recipients’ faces you know you made a big difference in somebody’s life!

2012 Montefiore Gift of Sound Mission Volunteer Perspective

I would like to share my perspective as a volunteer at the Foundation For Sight and Sound’s 4th annual Help America Hear Mission at Montefiore Medical Center on September 15, 2012. These are the stories from some of the recipients that I spent the most time with.
Grandma Carpenter, a lovely elderly woman who was so excited to be receiving her hearing aids. She never thought there would be a time in her life when she would be able to clearly hear what was being said to her. Milena, an intelligent, determined, pretty, college student whose hearing aids broke a few years ago, her family didn’t have the funds to purchase replacements.
Not only was she teased most of her life, but there was a time because of her hearing impairment her intelligence was questioned by teachers. Due to the fact that her family was unable to purchase new hearing aids, she taught herself to read lips and has learned sign language. Milena and her mother were so happy about her receiving state of the art hearing aids, she and her mother said “a long awaited dream come true,” they both broke into tears. Soon the three of us were crying tears of joy.
Larissa was a physicist in her native country, Russia. She came to the USA 30 years ago and raised her daughter. Ten years ago Larissa was in a serious life changing car accident causing her to require numerous surgical procedures, life for her has not been the same. About five years ago she started to lose her hearing, her mother was hearing impaired. Then one day while getting a check-up in her doctor’s office she found out about the Foundation For Sight and Sound. Larissa told me she can’t believe that there are people such as Mitch Shapiro and the FSS who volunteer their time to raise funds so that they are able to present free state of the art hearing aids to men, women and children who are financially unable to do so on their own.
She then said tell me the truth pointing to Mitch, doesn’t he get paid, I told her Mitch has visual and hearing limitations and Mitch’s goal in life is to help as many individuals as he can, to quote Mitch, “what you give comes back tenfold.” Seeing the happiness and joy the recipients feel after being fitted with their hearing aids, I can say firsthand, Mitch is absolutely correct.

2012 BGC Day of Giving

On Tuesday, September 11, 2012; The Foundation For Sight & Sound participated in the BGC Partners Day of Charity. This is the second time in 3 years we were selected to join with over 100 charities worldwide.

The idea behind this wonderful event is all commissions are donated from trading for the day and dispersed to the charities. Each charity brings their celebrity ambassador for one hour to talk to all the brokers, staff and management.

Canton Fitzgerald lost over 600 of their employees and management in the dreadful 9/11 attack on New York City’s Twin Towers. For the survivors of this company and present employee’s it was the 7th year of this charity day, a way to give in remembrance of their colleagues. It is by all means a great tribute.

What I personally found compelling, through the eyes of two of my companions for the day, were some interesting people in attendance. I guess it was the most realistic reminder of what the day represented. There was a young man there in a wheel chair, he lost both legs and one arm was quite mangled. My girlfriend Donna was talking to him and learned he lost his limbs from a land mine while serving overseas. She gave him a hug and told him that he was a real hero. It is without question meaningful to see the spirit of a young person, who suffered bodily damage but his spirit of life was not amputated.

Amazingly enough, three days after meeting him Lisa went to a networking event where another person was showing her pictures of BGC Day of Charity. The picture was of this young man. Lisa acknowledged the fact that Foundation For Sight & Sound was also there. Talk about six degrees of separation, the gentleman turned out to be the young man’s father.

Also in attendance was the fireman who ran with 60 pounds of gear on his back to reach the site of destruction to assist in the rescue efforts. Although we didn’t get to talk to him it was a reminder of who the real heroes of today are.

Representing the Foundation For Sight & Sound this year were Rusty Staub, Former Montreal Expo’s & New York Mets Catcher, and Dwight “Doc” Gooden, New York Mets & New York Yankee Pitcher. They spent a little over an hour shaking hands and signing autographs for everyone. There were many other celebrities from major sports teams and TV. Some were there to represent another charity or their own foundations. It was truly great to see them interact and show support for this day.

We applaud BGC partners for their philanthropic efforts to make the world a better place. It is because of their generosity and unselfishness charities can further their work in the community.
