The Foundation for Sight & Sounds turns dreams into possibilities by helping those without sight and sound live better, learn better and work better. Here are some of our current projects: Help America Hear Program The Foundation for Sight & Sound has formed a partnership with the EarQ Group to provide hearing aids to individuals with limited financial resources. The cost of purchasing hearing aids is not covered in all states by either Medicare or Medicaid. In addition, many private insurance programs do not cover the full cost. What do you do when insurance will not pay for hearing aids? The manufacturers suggested retail price for one hearing aid is $1,500 - $3,000. For individuals with limited financial resources these costs are astronomical. Help us give the gift of hearing to those in need. Trekker GPS The Trekker Global Positioning System (GPS) device helps the visually impaired navigate their way anywhere in the world through global positioning. It pinpoints exact locations and announces street names that enable the visually impaired greater independence and mobility. The manufacturer’s list price is $2,000 per unit. The GPS device can be used alone or with a guide dog. Since we began earmarking funds towards this program, FSS has purchased 20 units that have enhanced the lives of blind or visually impaired individuals who are assisted by a trained guide dog. Help us empower the visually challenged to flourish in today’s world – to be safe and have freedom. The Library Project – That all may read and share the vision! Visiting the public library has become more fulfilling for those with visual impairments. The Foundation for Sight & Sound provides assistive technologies to area libraries that enhance the magnification of computer or CCTV screens to bring the printed word to life. In these difficult financial times when municipal budgets are being downsized, libraries are in major need of funding for this equipment. The manufacturer’s suggested retail cost is $4,600 per library. In 2005 FSS began funding this program. To date, eighteen libraries have benefited from this worthy program.
